Imminence:
A protest for equity, diversity and inclusion
(in collaboration with St. Michael’s High School Art Department)
For this community art project, the youth decided to focus their efforts on equity, diversity and inclusion. To do this, they have created characters that are on a mission to foster positive change. Through imaginative processes and by re-thinking inclusive spaces, each character has a list of actions and demands. They invite you to re-imagine how you might make an impact moving forth. This art installation is being showcased at the Writers Fête between May 25-27, 2023. For more information, please visit: https://www.writersfete.com/imagine-action-youth-council.html

Imagine Action to end the Climate Emergency
We collaborated with various volunteer community members and organizers between January and November 2021. We first worked in collaboration with La Pêche’s Green New Deal, including Ilse Turnsen and supporter Anita Lambton. With their support, we claimed space and articulated our mandate. We care about lowering carbon emissions, the ethical treatment of animals and the conservation of our forests and ecosystems. We developed knowledge and allyship of intersectional land stewardship and the land back movement, where we wanted to focus fundraising energy.
Genevieve Cloutier offered workshops along with PAF President Patrick Thompson who facilitated a design process for the protest’s logo. Community member Sarah Doyle facilitated a tie-dye workshop and we were then supported by Saw Gallery, an artist-run-centre in Ottawa, that allowed us to use their printmaking studios. Patrick Thompson and Jason Vaughn assisted us in putting the design on posters, t-shirts and a banner: “Imagine Action” was the slogan as we encouraged local citizens to care for the earth and environment. We sold t-shirts at the Wakefield Farmer's Market before our Art March on August 28th – the result of which was celebrated and shared at PAF’s Art Exhibit and Festival, Cabinet of Curiosities in October 2021, as well as at a sponsored event by the Wakefield Writers Fête which took place at La Fab in November 2021. One of our youth leaders, Anouk Marks, edited a short documentary film about the process which was screened at the celebration.
Artist, Activist and Educator – Cara Tierney (they/them) will join us to talk about gender identity, art making and how creativity can be harnessed to build more inclusive worlds where we can all be responsible to, and for, one another. This workshop will invite participants to think about gender in relation to personal experience, language and freedom while exploring the ways that art can work to break down barriers and open up new possibilities for human engagement.

Cara Tierney (they/them) is an artist, curator, researcher, consultant, activist and part-time professor who lives and works in the Kichi Sibi area (so-called Ottawa, Canada). Proudly trans/non-binary, Tierney holds a MA in Canadian Art History from Carleton University, a MFA from the University of Ottawa and they are a PhD candidate at the Institute for Comparative Analysis in Literature, Arts and Culture at Carleton University. Their creative practice questions the way meaning is structured in, around and through the body while their academic work investigates the interrelationships of pedagogy, art and gender nonconformity. They teach history and theory of art as well as studio practice (photography and relational sculpture) at the University of Ottawa and are a contract instructor in the Pauline Jewett Women and Gender Studies department at Carleton University. Tierney is the 2019-2020 Artist in Residence in the University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine.

Collaborative Rock Warriors, April - May, 2020
PAF's Imagine Action Youth Council came together to create wacky collaborative earth warriors! Youth, family members, and community members have painted eyes, noses, hair, ears, and/or mouths on rocks. These were mixed and combined to create new collaborative characters that are working together to create positive social change for the earth. We are physically distant, but united. 'Dwayne The All-knowing', for example, is here to say, "Let's take care of the earth! Let's take care of each other!"
